About the Artist

Melissa "Sasi" Chambers, tarpestry artistMelissa “Sasi” Chambers is an artist living and working in Boise, Idaho, most of the time, though sometimes she lives and plays in New Orleans, Louisiana instead. Her artwork is informed by its setting and its function.  Where is it going to be seen and what does it need to express?  Sasi paints 2-D paintings as well as on 3-D objects. She also creates artwork using unorthodox materials such as polyvinyl tarps, duck tape and oil-based markers, and is in the process of evolving a new art form called “Tarpage.” Her work is playful, colorful, highly patterned, inspired by ethnic, traditional, or domestic motifs.  Sometimes it is representational, sometimes it is decorative, often it is a combination of both styles.  Sasi creates art for exhibition, art that is translated into public art, and art in situ. She has lately been focused on creating a series of tarpages (formerly known as “tarpestries”) for non-profit social justice organizations, both National and local, in Idaho. Photo books featuring the original evolution of the tarp art form, and the first series of 12 social justice tarps are available for purchase. Click here to see her Tarpage.
